Last Meeting of the Semester followed by a Technical Seminar with Professor Joe Jesson!

Wednesday, November 29, 2017 @ 12:00pm

Armstrong Hall 148

We will be discussing plans for next semester, tips for preparing for finals, and Professor Joe Jesson will be sharing with us information on how to use the new IEEE database!

Patent Innovation and Discovery Advances – Evaluation Results of the IEEE InnovationQ Plus Semantic Search Tool

Abstract

The IEEE, in partnership with IP.COM, has recently introduced a new major database search and discovery tool, known as InnovationQ Plus, which allows advanced patent and engineering documents searching, categorization, and discovery mapping. Joe recently evaluated this tool while researching historical & advanced sensor technology, sensors such as LIDAR, RF RADAR sensors, and pattern-recognizing cameras, all which enable autonomous vehicles today. He will present the interesting results of his InnovationQ Plus tool semantic searches, while contrasting patent prior-art searches made 15 years ago using simple Boolean search engines. Also presented will be new methodology on how an engineer may pursue obtaining a patent today – while explaining the recent changes to patent law. Discussed will be how both mature corporation monetize & leverage patents and answer, “what is the value of a patent or patent portfolio is to a technical entrepreneurial start-up?”. Several real-world interesting OAK and GE patent case studies will be discussed so don’t miss this presentation!

Bio

Joe Jesson, is CEO of RFSigint. a Wireless Sensor Patent Advisory Company, and Chief Technology Officer (CTO) of Able Devices and Assurenet, wireless telematics/IoT companies. Joe has 25+ years of experience in designing and implementing – through production – Telematics, M2M, and IoT wireless sensors & embedded systems and was awarded General Electric’s top Innovation prize, the Edison Award, in 2007. Joe was awarded over 15 patents. Currently TCNJ Adjunct Electrical Engineering Lecturer since 2013, IEEE Princeton Life Chair, holds graduate degrees from DePaul University in Chicago, and currently completing a DSc doctoral dissertation at NJCU.

This will count for ENG09x Professional Organization Meeting Attendance and Technical Seminar Attendance. Pizza will be served!

You can view his slides from the presentation here.  He has also provided a link to a video about what a patent is if anyone is interested.
